What Is a Neurological Disorder?
A neurological disorder is a condition that affects your nervous system — that is, the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Examples of neurological disorders include congenital conditions such as cerebral palsy, as well as conditions that may worsen over time, like dementia, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.
Neurological problems can also result from accidents and trauma. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), cognitive brain injuries (CBIs), and cerebrovascular accidents (CVIs) or strokes can all be the source of complications within the central nervous system.
These conditions can have an impact on your eyesight because they affect the relationship between the brain and the rest of your body. Your eyes send visual information in the form of electrical impulses to your brain. In turn, the brain interprets the signals it receives and turns them into images, allowing you to see the world around you.
Neurological disorders can disrupt that connection between the brain and the eyes, meaning that it’s possible for any brain injury to affect your vision.
How We Detect Neurological Disorders
At OPMT Vision Centers, we have a full scope of ways to test this connection between the eyes and brain and detect neurological conditions that can cause vision problems, using our state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to take an in-depth look.
Cognivue
Cognivue is a comprehensive tool that reliably detects changes in your brain function, including any disconnects between your eyes and brain. This unique piece of equipment is used not only to measure cognitive function where it relates to vision, but it can also spot warning signs of conditions like dementia, as well as help us establish a baseline to track the progress of neurological conditions.
OPMT Vision Centers is proud to be one of the only providers in the region to offer Cognivue testing to our patients!
Visual Evoked Potential (VEP)
Vision evoked potential, or VEP, is a test that is used to measure how the eyes send information to the brain by measuring the response through the pathways of your nerves. Changes in these pathways can be subtle, but they can have a huge effect on your vision. Using this test, we’ll be able to check how your eyes and brain respond to certain stimuli, such as alternating patterns or light.
How We Treat Neurological Disorders
If you’re experiencing vision trouble that cannot be fixed by corrective eyewear, the cause might be neurological. When you come to OPMT Vision Centers with this concern, we’ll run diagnostic tests during a neurological eye exam to measure your cognitive function and identify the source of visual issues.
If it turns out that your vision problems are the result of a neurological condition, Dr. Durocher will create a personalized treatment plan to address these issues. Often, your treatment will involve vision therapy, or vision rehabilitation, which involves exercises to improve your visual system.
No matter the results of our cognitive tests, Dr. Durocher’s experience treating patients with vision problems related to neurological disorders helps him to find a way to approach your specific needs.
