Vision and Learning Month

August is National Vision and Learning Month. What does this mean? This month is to help educate teachers and parents about the connection between vision and learning. 1 in 10 children have a vision problem significant enough to impact learning.

Below are 5 of the most common signs and symptoms of learning-related vision problems:

  • Skips lines, re-reads lines
  • Poor reading comprehension
  • Homework takes much longer than it should
  • Reverses letters like “b” and “d” when reading
  • Short attention span when reading and doing homework

80% of how we learn is through our vision. If a vision problem goes undetected, it can affect how we learn. Early detection is key. The first step is to schedule a comprehensive eye exam so if any vision problems are detected they may be treated early on before any major problems occur with learning or reading. If you are concerned if your child is developing normally, you can view a timeline here: http://www.covd.org/?page=child_timeline.

If you feel like your child might have a vision problem, schedule an exam at one of our 5 convenient locations throughout Middle Tennessee. Vision problems are treatable with optometric Vision Therapy, which we offer at our Nashville office. Remember vision is more than just seeing 20/20.
