Nutrition and Eye Health

In today’s society, a lot of people have been living “life on the go”. Where food is fast and convenient and people might not be concerned about how nutritious it might be.  With that being said, most people in today’s society are not getting the required minerals and vitamins from the foods they are eating and that can affect your whole body, even your eyes.

It is so important to have a healthy lifestyle and diet.  Good nutrition helps our bodies grow, repair wear and tear and protect against infection.  Good nutrition can also help us maintain good vision by preventing cataracts, macular degeneration, or retinopathies.

What foods can help you maintain that healthy and nutritious diet.

1. For Vitamins C and E: nuts, spinach, bell peppers, citrus fruits, broccoli, strawberries and tomatoes. Vitamin C and E function as antioxidants, so they will help protect your eyes from damage caused by harmful free radicals.

2. Omega 3-Fatty Acids: Salmon, tuna and mackerel. Omega 3-fatty acid may prevent retinopathies as well as help with dry eyes.

3. Zinc: red meats, nuts, seafood, eggs, beans, yogurt and poultry.  If you do not get enough zinc in your diet it could cause poor night vision, cloudy cataracts and macular degeneration.

4. Water: Drink the recommended amount of water a day. 8-10 glasses of water everyday.  This is keep your body hydrated as well as keeping your eyes hydrated so you don’t suffer from dry eyes. Make sure you drink the same amount of water as you consume of caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.
